No single tool covers every AI engine. Each source answers a different question, so a monthly report needs all five.
The five ways to track AI search visibility
| Method | What it shows | What it misses | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console: Generative AI report | Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date | Clicks and the queries behind them | Free |
| Bing Webmaster Tools: AI Performance | Citations in Copilot and Bing AI answers, cited pages and grounding queries | Clicks; ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity | Free |
| Google Analytics 4 | Visits and conversions from AI assistants that pass a referrer | Mentions with no click; some app traffic shows as direct | Free |
| Server logs | Visits from AI search bots and user-triggered fetches | Whether you were actually cited | Free |
| Monthly prompt check | Whether AI assistants name you and which competitors appear | Scale; answers vary by user and day | Free (your time) |
1. Google Search Console: Generative AI performance report
Google launched this report on 3 June 2026 and rolled it out to all sites by the end of August 2026. It gives a dedicated view of how often your pages appear inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus generative features in Discover.
The report shows impressions, the pages that earned them, countries, dates and, for Search, devices. It does not show clicks or queries yet. Use it to find which pages Google’s AI already trusts, then strengthen those pages and link to them from related content.
Also check that your site is included in Google’s generative AI features in Search Console settings. Google says a site must be included to be eligible.
2. Bing Webmaster Tools: AI Performance report
Microsoft released this report as a public preview in February 2026. It counts how often your pages are cited as sources in Microsoft Copilot, Bing’s AI summaries and some partner integrations.
The most useful part is the grounding queries list: the searches Copilot ran behind the scenes to find sources. These read like long, keyword-dense questions, and they show you exactly which topics AI systems associate with your site. Setting up Bing Webmaster Tools takes a few minutes if you import your site from Search Console.
3. Google Analytics 4: AI referral traffic
When someone clicks a link in an AI answer, the visit usually arrives with the AI tool as its referrer. Create a custom channel group or an exploration filtered by session source with this pattern:
chatgpt.com|chat.openai.com|perplexity.ai|gemini.google.com|copilot.microsoft.com|claude.ai|chat.deepseek.com
Track sessions, engaged sessions and conversions from this group each month. Expect the numbers to understate reality: some AI app traffic arrives without a referrer and is counted as direct.
4. Server logs: which AI bots read your pages
Your hosting provider’s access logs record every bot visit. Search them for these user agents:
- OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot: indexing your pages for AI search answers.
- ChatGPT-User, Claude-User, Perplexity-User: fetching a page because a real person just asked an AI about it.
- GPTBot, ClaudeBot: collecting content for model training.
Rising visits from search bots are an early sign your content is being considered for citations. If these bots never appear, check robots.txt and your firewall settings.
5. Monthly prompt check: are you actually named?
Write 10 to 20 questions a real buyer would ask, then ask each one in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode once a month. Use a temporary or logged-out chat so past history does not skew answers. Record the results in a sheet like this:
| Prompt | AI engine | Named? | Position | Competitors named | Pages cited |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| best AI SEO agency in India for B2B | ChatGPT | Yes / No | 1st, 2nd… | ||
| how much does a website cost in Patna | Gemini | Yes / No |
Your AI share of voice is the percentage of prompts where you are named. Track it over time rather than reading too much into a single month, because AI answers vary between runs.
What to put in a monthly AI visibility report
- AI Overview and AI Mode impressions, top 10 pages (Search Console)
- Copilot citations and top grounding queries (Bing Webmaster Tools)
- AI referral sessions and conversions (GA4)
- AI search bot visits (server logs)
- Share of voice across your prompt list, with competitors named
- Three actions for next month, such as updating a page that lost citations
How to set up an AI channel group in GA4, step by step
- In Google Analytics 4, open Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups.
- Create a new channel group (copy the default one so your other channels stay intact).
- Add a new channel called “AI assistants”.
- Set the condition: Source matches regex, using the pattern shown above.
- Move the new channel above Referral in the list, so AI visits aren’t counted as ordinary referrals.
- Save, then use the new channel group in your acquisition reports and explorations.
Once saved, check a recent month’s report to confirm visits from AI assistants are grouped correctly.
How to build a monthly AI visibility sheet
Keep one simple spreadsheet with a row per month:
| Column | Source |
|---|---|
| AI Overview and AI Mode impressions | Search Console Generative AI report |
| Top 5 pages by AI impressions | Search Console Generative AI report |
| Copilot citations and cited pages | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance |
| Top grounding queries | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance |
| AI referral sessions and conversions | GA4 AI assistants channel |
| AI search bot requests | Server logs or CDN analytics |
| Share of voice across your prompt list | Monthly prompt check |
| Actions taken this month | Your notes |
Twelve months of this sheet tells you far more than any single report.
How to read the data
| Pattern | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| AI impressions rising, AI referrals flat | You’re being shown, but not clicked | Make cited pages more compelling and conversion-ready |
| Copilot citations concentrated on one page | That page is your strongest asset | Keep it updated; link to it from related pages |
| Citations falling on a page | Content may be ageing or competitors improved | Refresh facts, dates and examples |
| Search bots rarely visiting | Access or discovery problem | Check robots.txt, firewall rules and sitemaps |
| Competitors named, you’re not | Weak corroboration or unclear positioning | Strengthen reviews, mentions and category pages |
A sample prompt list for a service business
Adapt these 12 prompts to your own services and city, and keep the wording identical every month:
- Best [service] company in [city]
- [Service] cost in [city] in 2026
- Is [your brand] good for [service]?
- [Your brand] vs [competitor]
- How to choose a [service] provider
- [Service] for small businesses in India
- Who are the top [service] agencies in India?
- What does [service] include?
- How long does [service] take?
- [Problem your service solves] — how do I fix it?
- Affordable [service] near me
- Reviews of [your brand]
Prompts 3, 4 and 12 test what AI engines say about you directly; the rest test whether you’re recommended.
Tracking AI visibility for local businesses
Local businesses have extra places to check:
- Google Maps Ask Maps: on your phone, ask questions about your business and category, and note what Gemini says and which sources it shows.
- Google Business Profile Performance: track calls, direction requests and website clicks month by month.
- Local prompts: include “near me” and area names in your prompt list.
- UTM tags on your profile’s website link, so visits from Google Business Profile are separated from other Google traffic in GA4.
Free vs paid AI visibility tools
| Tool type | Examples | What you get | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free first-party tools | Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, GA4 | Real data from Google and Microsoft, and your own traffic | No ChatGPT or Perplexity citation counts |
| Manual prompt checks | A spreadsheet and your own time | Direct view of what AI assistants say | Time-consuming at scale; answers vary |
| Paid AI visibility trackers | Various SaaS platforms | Hundreds of prompts tracked automatically, competitor share of voice, trends | Cost; estimates rather than official data |
Start with the free tools and a manual prompt list. Consider paid tracking once you’re monitoring more than about 50 prompts or several competitors.
Connect AI visibility to leads and revenue
Impressions and citations show whether AI engines see you. Your business needs to know whether that turns into enquiries. Many people read an AI answer and then search your name, type your web address or message you directly, so much of AI’s influence never appears as an AI referral in GA4. Close the gap with a few simple habits:
- Ask every new lead how they found you. Add a “How did you hear about us?” field to your forms, with options such as Google search, Google Maps, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, social media and referral.
- Ask the same question on calls and WhatsApp. Make sure whoever answers enquiries asks it and records the answer.
- Store the source next to the deal value in your CRM or lead sheet, so you can later see revenue by source, not just lead counts.
- Watch branded search. Rising Search Console impressions for your business name can be a sign that more people are hearing about you, including from AI answers.
- Compare AI referral visits with other channels. In GA4, check how many sessions from your AI channel group lead to a form submission or WhatsApp click, and compare that with organic search.
An illustrative example: a clinic sees only 12 visits a month from ChatGPT in GA4, but 9 of its 60 new patients that month say they first heard of it from an AI assistant. The second number is the one that should shape the budget.
Review these numbers every quarter. You are looking for a trend, not perfect attribution: more leads that mention AI tools, more branded searches, and AI referral visits that turn into enquiries.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics?
Yes, for clicks that pass a referrer. Filter session source for chatgpt.com. Visits from the ChatGPT app may show as direct, so treat the figure as a minimum.
Does Search Console show AI Overviews data?
Yes. The Generative AI performance report shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. It does not show clicks or queries yet.
Is there a way to see ChatGPT citations directly?
Not from OpenAI at present. Bing’s report covers Copilot, and Search Console covers Google’s AI features. For ChatGPT, combine a monthly prompt check with GA4 referrals and server logs.
Are paid AI visibility tools worth it?
They save time if you track hundreds of prompts. Google notes that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems, so treat their scores as estimates.
How often should I check AI visibility?
Monthly is enough for most businesses. Check sooner after a site migration, a big content update or a robots.txt change.
Does Search Console show which queries trigger AI Overviews?
Not in the Generative AI report at present. It shows impressions by page, country, device and date. Combine it with the main Performance report and your own prompt checks to infer which questions you appear for.
How can I see AI bot visits on a WordPress site?
Ask your host for raw access logs, or use your CDN’s bot analytics if you use one. Search the logs for user agents such as OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot.
What’s a good AI share of voice?
There’s no universal benchmark. Measure your starting point across 20 to 50 prompts, compare with your main competitors, and aim to improve steadily each quarter.
Why do AI answers change every time I ask?
AI assistants generate each answer fresh and may run different searches each time. Personalisation, location and model updates also play a part. That’s why you should track the same prompts monthly and look at trends rather than single results.
Should I track AI visibility weekly?
For most businesses, monthly is enough. Check weekly only during a site migration, a major content launch or after changing robots.txt or firewall rules, when problems need catching quickly.
Can I see which AI assistant sent a lead?
Often, yes: GA4 shows the source of visits that arrive with a referrer, such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai. Add a “How did you hear about us?” option for AI assistants to capture the rest.
